The award marks another significant milestone for the Kenyan production, which tells a deeply difficult story inspired by the real-life JMM case. The film confronts issues surrounding sexual violence, unsafe abortion, healthcare and the systems that are expected to protect vulnerable people. It is not the kind of story that allows an audience to simply watch, switch off and move on.

Awards are exciting, and yes, there is absolutely nothing wrong with enjoying the shiny trophy moment. 😂 But recognition like this also shines a spotlight on Kenyan filmmakers who are creating stories rooted in local realities while proving that those stories can resonate far beyond their immediate surroundings.

Prayer for the Departed began with a painful story. It became a film, the film became a conversation, and now that conversation has earned Best International Feature Film.
